Mixing different spiritual practices together
by Khenpo Tashi
“Spiritual mixing” is the tendency for us to mix different spiritual practices together. Whether the practices are from different lineages of Tibetan Buddhism, or they come from different cultures and religions.
On the basic level, Buddhism has similarities with other religions – compassion, kindness, virtue, quest for truth, abandoning negativity.
However, there is no need to mix different spiritual traditions. Even within Tibetan Buddhism’s different schools, we don’t need to mix practices.
There is a reason why they are different, or why they serve different purposes. Even inside Buddhism, there are hundreds of teachings at different levels, and from different lineages.
They are meant to be practiced one by one, and by following the proper sequence, under a qualified teacher.
We respect each religion. As for our own practice, we should check what is best for us. If we choose Buddhism, then, finding a proper teacher, requesting for instructions, and following them are crucial.
If we just practice on our own, through Buddhist books and videos, not much benefit. We will make our minds colorful with all kinds of instructions. But, without the teacher’s instructions, the teachings will not penetrate our mind. That is for sure.
Sometimes, reading many things will make it hard for one to listen to the teacher. How? Because we already developed our own strong assumptions of what to do and not. That is totally not helpful for us.
What do you think? Check it.
