The Word ‘Pride’

The word ‘pride’ we normally talk about, is formally known as “self-grasping” or “self-centeredness”. In Tibetan, it is dak-dzin. Dak means ‘self’, ‘I’, ‘myself’. Dzin means to ‘grasp’, to ‘hold tightly’, to ‘clench’, to ‘cling’. Self-clinging. So, the word dak-dzin is very symbolic, very meaningful.

There is a Buddhist saying.  

Our pride (Tib: dak-dzin) is endless.

Thus, our obscuring thoughts (Tib.: nam-tok) are endless.

Due to this, our emotions (Tib.: nyon mong pa) are endless.

Due to this, our Karmas (Tib.:le) are endless.

Due to this, Samsara is endless.

Due to this, our sufferings are endless.
